“1 Then after 14 years, I went up again to Jerusalem, this time with Barnabas. I took Titus along also.
2 I went in response to a revelation and, meeting privately with those esteemed as leaders, I presented to them the gospel that I am currently preaching among the Gentiles. I wanted to be sure I was not running and had not been running my race in vain. “
Paul is not a total rebel – he recognizes the legitimacy of the Apostolic leadership, but that does not mean he subscribes to everything coming out of Jerusalem. There are still issues between Paul and James (my personal theory… I won’t fight on that mountain – but that is the feeling I am getting)… yet he still goes there to confirm that what he is preaching is in line with the Gospel. As smart as he is, Paul recognizes it is unhealthy to be without accountability. Here, Paul mentions that council in Jerusalem where he and the Judaizers debated their “gospels” in front of all the other Apostles. This was a pivotal point in Paul’s ministry.
I wonder if Paul was surprised that Christians who were of the Pharisees (like he was) opposed him… one of their own!
