The question concerning authorship and the date of Revelation’s writing is pretty important when it comes to understanding John’s missive. There are currently (in my research so far) two theories concerning the date of its authorship. One view has it being written during Nero’s reign – between Ad 60-65, with the other view saying that John wrote this while imprisoned on Patmos during the reign of Domitian, AD 90-95.
Depending on your position it will determine how you deal with the imagery presented in this letter. If you hold to the earlier date – where he was imprisoned on Patmos during the reign of Nero in AD 70ish- then John’s Revelation has everything to do with the destruction of Jerusalem and Israel and the enmity between Israel, Rome, and the Church. However, if you hold to a later dating (AD 90-95) where John was in Patmos during the reign of Domitian, then John’s Revelation has less to do with the 1st-century Church and Israel than it has to do with a more global and future audience.
