I want you to know that in an attempt at transparency, I am conflicted about how to interpret this iconic letter from John. My church background has always had me believing in a literal 7-year Great Tribulation, preceded or followed by or split up by the Rapture of the church. But lately, I have been considering the thought that the symbolism used here is not symbolism of specific events, but more symbolic of the ongoing struggle between the Kingdom of God (hint – us) and the Kingdom(s) of this world. As an example, will there be an actual Antichrist (we will get to him later) – a global leader who comes to power and seeks to destroy Israel, or is it symbolic of the fact that almost every generation has its Antichrist, warring against the Church? Trust me when I say this – there are legitimately brilliant scholars on BOTH sides of this issue. So if it seems that I “waffle” at times between those two camps… I am, and indeed WILL “waffle”. This letter is taking me into deep waters, and I am not sure I can make it in the deep end of THIS theological pool. Time will tell.

All of this leads me to this question that I constantly ask myself, and it is especially pertinent as I read this revelation given to John.

“Am I willing to be surprised when I finally DO learn the truth contained in these pages of this iconic letter?”

What if, after all my study and contemplation, I go home to Jesus, only to find out I had it all wrong? Do I have the humility to address that possibility NOW? To my Pre-Trib Rapture, literal 1000-year Millennial reign of Christ friends… are you willing to be surprised to find out you were incorrect? And the same question goes to my Amillennial and Post-Millennial friends… are you willing to be surprised to find out you were incorrect?
