There’s something deeply humbling about reading the Bible for the second time with fresh eyes. It’s like discovering you’ve known the lyrics to a song your whole life—but never really understood the music. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that so many of my thoughts about God, salvation, and the Bible itself weren’t shaped by Scripture as much as they were by culture, tradition, and assumption.
I’m reminded of the Pevensie children in The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis. Aslan gave them a set of words—“Under Me”—and they were sure they understood. Surely, this was a metaphor, a poetic pointer to something deeper. But when they found those very words carved in stone beneath their feet, they realized the meaning was far more literal than they imagined. They had known the words. But they had missed the meaning.
I fear I’ve done the same with Scripture, especially with Revelation. Sometimes I’ve taken the words too metaphorically, other times too literally. And I’ve begun to ask myself a hard question: Am I willing to be wrong?
That question isn’t just academic—it’s essential. Because when we walk into apocalyptic literature like Revelation, we’re stepping into a world of symbols, layered meanings, cultural references, and divine mysteries. I will draw conclusions, yes—but I hold them loosely. I’m not afraid to say, “I might be wrong.” Because in Revelation, more than any other book, interpretation requires humility. It demands a willingness to wrestle with ancient imagery without clinging too tightly to modern molds.
And so, as I open Revelation 11:1–6, I do so with this guiding thought—words that Aslan might’ve whispered to me, too:
“When you cannot see the signs, still follow the path. When you fail to remember, still choose what is right. And when you fall, rise again. My signs do not fade, even when your eyes do.”
