The wrath of God is even now being revealed. Perhaps not in a way you might expect. God is addressing godlessness and wickedness – two different aspects of the sin problem we have in humanity. Godlessness is the vertical aspect – the relationship between man and God. Wickedness is the horizontal aspect of the sin problem – the relationship(s) between us humanoids here on Earth.
Growing up, my parents disciplined us kids many a time by letting us have what we said we wanted. Sometimes THAT is the most effective punishment. That is the approach Paul uses in this verse.
If we REALLY think through it, we will see that the sin in our lives and the havoc it wreaks are really “previews of coming attractions” of what life in Hell will be like. Currently, God’s Spirit is with us – and even the unsaved feel the effects of God’s Spirit through every good and kind thing done or said. This “slow reveal” of God’s wrath is a warning, just as the outer bands of a hurricane are a warning to those in its path.
God, in letting us suffer the consequences of our sin, is warning us. We should take heed.
