Romans chapter 1 introduces Paul’s gospel and then lays out the fundamental problem of humanity: although God has clearly revealed Himself through creation, people suppress that truth, refuse to honor Him, and exchange His glory for substitutes. As a result, God’s wrath is revealed not primarily through sudden punishment, but by giving people over to the desires and patterns they insist on pursuing—first to sinful desires, then to sexual impurity, and finally to a depraved mind. This downward spiral shows how rejecting the Creator leads to distorted worship, disordered desires, and corrupted thinking, until evil is not only practiced but openly approved. Romans 1 establishes that human rebellion is deliberate, judgment is often God’s removal of restraint, and apart from the gospel, humanity inevitably unravels from the inside out.
When I read this first chapter of Romans – and especially after studying it – it reads like Paul is describing 21st-century America.
The modern moral confusion in America is, therefore, no surprise. A culture that suppresses God’s truth and celebrates rebellion is simply living out the pattern Paul describes: a people given over, eyes that do not see, ears that do not hear, hearts hardened, and minds that have abandoned God’s standard.
