I am sure we have all known people like this. The attitude that says,
“My membership in this church—or this synagogue—comes with benefits and privileges.”
has appeared in every century of God’s people. It wears different clothing in different eras, but the assumption remains the same: proximity to holy things is mistaken for participation in saving grace.
There’s a sobering reality woven into Paul’s words that we can’t afford to miss. A person can sit in the church week after week, hear the Word taught clearly, and even identify themselves as one of God’s people—and still not belong to Him in the way that truly matters.
Proximity can look a lot like authenticity on the surface. Being around truth is not the same as being changed by it. Hearing the gospel is not the same as responding to it. Carrying the identity of “God’s people” is not the same as having a heart that has been transformed.
