Christ is the True Foundation 

There is a powerful connection between Jesus’ parable of the house built on sand and Paul’s assessment of Israel in Romans 10:1–4. In both cases, the issue is not a lack of religious effort. The issue is building one’s life on the wrong foundation.

Jesus says that the person who hears His words and puts them into practice is like a wise man who builds his house on the rock. The foolish man also hears—but does not act on what he hears. His house is built on sand, and when the storm comes, it collapses.  You can find this story in Matthew 7:24–27 — at the conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount. There is also an old hymn that expresses this truth beautifully:

My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

10:2 Zeal Without Knowledge

Paul makes essentially the same distinction concerning Israel. He says:

“For I can testify about them that they have zeal for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge.” (Romans 10:2)

That is a remarkable statement. Paul isn’t accusing Israel of being indifferent toward God. Quite the opposite. They had zeal. They were passionate. They were religiously committed. They knew the Scriptures. They pursued righteousness.

But their zeal was built on the wrong foundation.
