Paul has just spent verses 3–8 discussing the different gifts God has given members of the Body of Christ. Now, in verses 9–13, he begins describing the character that should govern the way those gifts are exercised.
In other words, having a gift is not enough. The gift must operate within the character of genuine Christian love.
A person may be a gifted teacher, an effective leader, a generous giver, or an inspiring speaker. But if those gifts are not exercised with genuine love, something essential is missing. Love points outward, not inward – or, to be even more plain, any exercising of a Spiritual Gift in your life must have as its “end-game” the betterment of the other person and the glorification of God – not the elevation of yourself.
