When I look back over verses 10 through 13, I see Paul moving from the character of Christian relationships to the practical expression of that character.
Verse 10 describes the destination: We are to be devoted to one another in love and take the initiative in showing honor.
Verse 11 describes the journey: We maintain our diligence and spiritual fervor because our service to others is actually serving the Lord.
Verse 12 provides the food for that journey: The hope, implanted in us by our sovereign God, the “God Who Sees,” the “God of ALL my circumstances”, “El Roi”, will give us patience and endurance in our afflictions, and give us impetus to be persistent in prayer.
And then verse 13 brings all of it into the practical world in which we live. Share what you have. Make room for others. Don’t allow the love you profess to remain an idea or an emotion. Put it to work!
After all the explanation, Paul seems to say, “Let me make this easy for you. If you want to know what this kind of love looks like, share with those who need help and open your home to others.”
