The point of this short letter to Smyrna was to warn of coming persecution – which, approximately 30 years later resulted in the martyrdom of Polycarp, John’s disciple and Bishop of Smyrna. He was indeed
“…faithful, even to the point of death…”
Another thought is that Polycarp may very well have been working in Smyrna when John wrote down the Revelation, and if that is indeed the case, then we can say “well done” to Polycarp. Why? Because Smyrna received no rebuke from Jesus. I would say Polycarp did an outstanding job.
