I used to wonder why the angels did not appear to the “professional” religious folk in the Temple… why shepherds?

That was the thought and question I circled my mental wagons around as I considered this aspect of the Incarnation. After wrestling with this, I have concluded that the shepherds were the PERFECT candidates for this part of the Christmas story.

I get the sense – especially after reading the Gospels- that the self-important religious leaders would have found a way to make it all about themselves. Besides, I am not sure even angels could convince them that the Messiah’s mother would be the unfaithful wife (the rumors aboutMary would be common knowledge) of a carpenter from Nazareth. No, the working, blue-collar men in those fields were the perfect candidates.
