1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God—
The apostle Paul, the author of the letter to the Romans, stands as one of the most influential figures in early Christianity. Once a zealous Pharisee known as Saul of Tarsus, Paul was rigorously trained in Jewish law and passionately devoted to the traditions of his ancestors. His dramatic encounter with the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus transformed him from a persecutor of the Church into its most tireless missionary.
Writing to believers in Rome whom he had not yet visited, Paul brings together his deep knowledge of the Hebrew Scriptures, his understanding of the Greco-Roman world, and his personal experience of God’s grace. He also writes into a growing tension within the Roman church—a conflict between Jewish and Gentile believers over identity, law, and covenant status. Romans reflects Paul’s pastoral heart and theological depth as he explains the gospel as God’s unifying answer to human division: the revelation of God’s righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ, offered equally to Jew and Gentile alike.
