Standing in the grace of God has been hard for me to grasp. One image that has helped me think about it is this: imagine the grace of God as a great building. We have been personally ushered inside. Outside that building, a storm is raging—the chaotic storm of sin, rebellion, and all of sin’s consequences. I envision an F5 tornado shredding buildings, blowing up homes, throwing people and their possessions everywhere, destroying lives. That is a good picture of the power of sin. But inside the building, we are sheltered. The structure itself protects us from the judgment taking place outside. Grace becomes the place where we now live, the environment in which we stand, safe from the destruction that falls on those who remain outside in rebellion.
Even as I write that, however, the image feels too small. Being “in the grace of God” must mean more than simply standing under a roof while judgment happens elsewhere. Grace is not merely a shelter from wrath; it is the realm in which we now live before God.
