Romans – 1:7… Unpacking the word “Holy”

February 2, 2026

The word “holy” in Paul’s greetings is applied to the recipients of this letter.

To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy (γιος  – hagios) people:

What does it mean to be called “holy”? Paul says those believers in Rome are called “holy people”. By extension, that also refers to us. So what does being called “holy” really mean?

It refers to our position in God’s kingdom. It implies that we are God’s possession. It implies we were chosen by God for sacred use.

That’s God’s part. What is our part? If we are called holy, then it is implied that we will act like it.
