On one side is death. On the other side is life. On one side is slavery to sin. On the other side is slavery to God. In both cases, there is service, allegiance, and submission. The question is not whether we will serve, but whom we will serve.
As I read these verses, my mind immediately goes to Joshua’s challenge to Israel as they prepared to enter the Promised Land:
“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…” (Joshua 24:15)
Joshua presents Israel with three options: serve the gods of the past, the gods of the land they are entering, or the Lord who has faithfully brought them to that very moment. Yet even in Joshua’s challenge there is no offer of autonomy. Israel will serve someone. The only choice is who their master will be.
Paul presents the same reality in Romans 6. Every person serves a master. The question is whether that master is sin or God.
