The Law reveals what God’s righteousness, holiness, justice, and goodness look like in human conduct.
Why Defend the Law?
This perspective also helps explain why Paul is so determined to defend the Law. He is not merely defending a set of statutes and rules; he is defending the character of God!
If the Law merely consisted of arbitrary rules, then one might conclude that the rules themselves are the problem. But Paul insists that is not the case at all:
“Is the Law sin? Certainly not!” (Romans 7:7)
Why? Because to attack the Law would be, in a sense, to attack the character of the God who gave it. The problem is not the Law but sin, which twists something holy into an opportunity for rebellion (Romans 7:8).
That is why Paul can say:
The Law is holy (reflecting God’s holiness), and the commandment is righteous (reflecting God’s justice). The commandment is good (reflecting God’s goodness), while also saying that sin exploits that very goodness to produce death.
