Over the years, I never really pursued the gifts (of the Spirit) themselves. I pursued God. I read His Word, I prayed, and I tried to do whatever was at hand to do.
And somewhere along the way, those gifts began to show up in my dealings with people.
They appeared so naturally and organically that I didn’t even think of what I was doing as exercising a spiritual gift.
For example, a situation would present itself, and I would find myself applying God’s Word to that situation—not in a preachy or condescending manner, but in a way that offered hope, encouragement, or comfort. That is one way I came to understand the gift of prophecy in my own life: speaking God’s truth into a particular situation.
At other times, I would be teaching, and a student would ask a complicated question about music. I would find myself explaining the answer in two or three different ways until I discovered an explanation that made sense to that particular student. I realized that I had a way of taking something complex and making it easier to understand.
And then there was Administration. I discovered that I had a knack for organizing complex sets of information—whether it was arranging material for a book on learning the CAGED system for guitar or organizing the outline for the study you are reading right now.
These three gifts seem to flow through my life as naturally as a stream flows toward the ocean.
