Paul has just declared something astonishing in the previous verses: because we have been justified by faith, we now have peace with God, and we stand in grace. The believer’s relationship with God has been fundamentally changed. Hostility has been replaced by peace; condemnation by acceptance. No longer our enemy, God is now our ally.
But Paul does not stop there.
He pushes the idea even further.
“Not only so,…” or in other words, “And not only this…”
In other words, the benefits of justification are not limited to peace, grace, and the hope of glory. Something else has changed as well — the way believers understand suffering.
