Romans 4 is not a side trail in Paul’s argument. It is the keystone. Remove it, and the entire structure collapses. If righteousness is credited by faith, then boasting is silenced, privilege is leveled, and salvation stands as grace from beginning to end.
Paul’s entire argument can be distilled into a single sentence he would gladly sign his name to:
God did not declare Abraham righteous because he was righteous; God declared Abraham righteous because he believed.
And that sentence is what throws the door wide open to both Jew and Gentile—without diminishing justice and without compromising holiness.
