“If salvation is really like this… then what do we do with the Law? What about covenant identity? What about obedience? What about… us?”
Paul answers all of that with one devastating question:
“Where, then, is boasting?”
or
“What are you looking to boast about?”
I get it. For centuries, Israel was the sole caretaker for the things of God – His Word, His worship – all of it. They had the Torah written by THEIR ancestors, worshiping at an incredible Temple that was a wonder.
It must have been difficult hearing Paul say what he has been saying here in Romans so far.
To answer that question, Paul says… no. What you want to do can’t be done.
The Law is not degraded by the Gospel. It isn’t to be dismissed. The Law is important. The problem was (and still is) that religious-minded people want to define the Law as something that it was never intended to be. The Law isn’t about redemption – it’s about revelation. It reveals us to us. It reveals God to us. It does not justify us.
