8:1 No Condemnation
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus…
This is perhaps the biggest “therefore” in all of Scripture. When we see the word “therefore”, it’s like saying
“Because of what we have just talked about, we can conclude that…”
or
“Because of THAT… we now know THIS…”
Because of THAT
Paul has laid out the true natural condition of man in the first three chapters, i.e., that all of humanity falls short of God’s standards. He follows this with how the Law reveals our sin and God’s righteousness in chapters four through six. In Chapter 7, he perfectly describes the dilemma every Christ-follower faces as we wrestle with the duality of our natures that wage war within us. He ends it with that incredible question and its answer:
What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!
We Now Know THIS
And now – this colossal “Therefore” in verse 1 of chapter 8. If I were to re-word this the way I am hearing it in my heart, I hear Paul telling me:
“In your ongoing war against your old nature, fighting battles you sometimes win, and sometimes lose, you NEED to know this – you are not condemned.”
