There is an old story sometimes attributed to a Native American elder. It goes like this:
An old grandfather is teaching his grandson about life. He says, “A fight is going on inside me. It is a terrible fight between two wolves. One wolf is evil. He is anger, envy, jealousy, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
The other wolf is good. He is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.” The grandfather continues, “The same fight is going on inside you—and inside every person.”
The grandson thinks for a moment and asks,
“Which wolf wins?”
The grandfather replies,
“The one you feed.”
This is a perfect proverb for what Paul presents in verse 5 of chapter 8.
5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
