Paul, I believe, is calling us to more than a mere “tipping of the hat” to the Word of God, but to a daily routine that incorporates it into every activity and waking moment. I get immense joy from doing a study like this one in Romans. To me, there is great pleasure in understanding what God is saying through the written pages of my Bible. I often get up at 4:30 in the morning to do what I am doing right now – reading a passage from Romans, “thinking aloud” to myself (hagah) as I parse out what Paul is communicating in this epic letter to the church at Rome. There is a sacredness to my early morning times spent meditating and writing my thoughts down concerning the Scripture. It’s dark outside; the world is quiet around me, everybody else in the house is sleeping, and there is a joy in me even as I am writing these words. Immersion in God’s Word is a HUGE component to learning to “live according to the Spirit”.
