He knows everything about us – past, present, and future. But this concept is hard for us to wrap our heads around. Why? Because we know our past… we know our present… but we have no clue about our future.

Look at it this way: I am an author – I have actually written a novel! I can hold that book in my hand, and as its author, I know the beginning, middle, and end simultaneously. However, the characters in my novel only know things one page at a time. They don’t know what the next page, paragraph, or chapter brings. But I do – because I am the author.

That’s the story of God and us. He is the Author of our lives. He has written the story of our lives already. He stands outside of time – He sees and knows the whole picture. We, for the time being, are captive within the boundaries of time. We cannot see the future. We are the characters in our life’s story, only seeing God’s will a page at a time.

Within THAT context, I can say confidently that EVERY circumstance of my life is part of HIS plan for my life. That includes the good and the bad. When Hurricane Hugo destroyed my home in South Carolina, when I got fired from a lucrative job that led to bankruptcy… all of that was part of God’s plan for me… because He is El Roi. He sees me. He knows me. He has written the story of my life. He knows beginning, middle, and end. I only see it a page at a time. Because I know this, I can look at EVERY circumstance and say with confidence, with Paul, that:

“… we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him…”
