The One Question

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things?

With this single question, Paul reaches the summit of the mountain he has been climbing since the opening chapter of Romans. Everything he has written—from humanity’s hopeless condition in sin to the breathtaking assurance of life in Christ—now converges into one final, triumphant conclusion.

“What, then, shall we say?”

Paul is not asking because he lacks an answer. He is inviting us to pause and take one last look back over the road we have traveled. Before he gives us one of the greatest declarations of confidence found anywhere in Scripture, he wants us to remember everything God has already done.

Think about where we began.

We were spiritually dead. We were not searching for God; we were running from Him. We were guilty before His perfect justice, powerless to save ourselves, and deserving of His righteous judgment. We were enemies of God, living under the tyranny of sin and unable to free ourselves from its grip.

Yet God acted.

He justified us—not because we earned it, but because Christ paid our debt. He redeemed us from slavery, purchasing our freedom with the blood of His Son. He reconciled us to Himself, replacing hostility with peace. He adopted us into His own family, giving us the astonishing privilege of calling the Creator of the universe, “Abba, Father.”

So now Paul asks:

“What, then, shall we say in response to these things?”

What words could be adequate in a response to this question? How do you respond to grace this magnificent? How do you summarize a salvation this complete? What argument could possibly be raised against a God who has accomplished all of this for His people?

Indeed –

“What, then, shall we say in response to these things?”
