What we see in Romans 10 is Paul working through the tension caused by the Gentiles responding to the Gospel while the jews wwere rejecting it without abandoning any part of the biblical story.

God has not abandoned Israel.

The Gospel has not failed.

The Gentile mission is not a departure from God’s plan.

And Israel’s unbelief does not mean that God’s promises have collapsed.

Instead, Paul argues that all of this is unfolding within the larger purpose of God revealed in Israel’s own Scriptures. Remember Isaiah?

“I was found by those who did not seek me;

I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me.

All day long I have held out my hands

to a disobedient and obstinate people.” (Isaiah 65:1–2)

That is why Romans 10:17–21 is not merely an appendix to the discussion about preaching. It is the next step in Paul’s argument.

He has established why people must hear.

He has shown that Israel has heard.

He has demonstrated from Israel’s own Scriptures that God intended to reach the nations.

And now he confronts the response of those who have heard.

The Gentiles are hearing and responding.

Israel has heard, yet many (if not most) are resisting.

That leads naturally into Romans 11:

If Israel has heard and has resisted, has God’s word failed? Paul will say no.

God’s purposes have not failed – the story is not over.

Most importantly, Paul’s ministry to the Gentiles is not evidence that God has abandoned Israel. It is part of the unfolding of the very plan God had revealed through Israel’s Scriptures. From Israel… to the world.
