If God has not abandoned Israel, how do we explain what we are seeing? Paul has just explained that a remnant of Israel has believed, while the rest have been hardened. Remember the story of Elijah? He thought he was the only one left in all of Israel who remained faithful to God. But in spite of what it looked like to Elijah, the truth was that God had set aside a remnant.
To help his readers understand this difficult reality of the 1st-century Israel, Paul draws from three sources in Israel’s Scriptures. Each contributes something different to his argument.
Isaiah describes the spiritual blindness of God’s people. Moses reminds Israel that witnessing God’s mighty works does not automatically produce understanding. David provides the language of judgment against those who oppose God’s purposes.
Together, these passages help Paul explain the tragic spiritual condition of so many of his fellow Israelites.
