God has not written off the Jewish people. This is not simply a matter of one era being the “Age of Israel” and the next becoming the “Age of the Gentiles,” as though Jewish thought, scholarship, and influence have no further place in the Church. Paul is making it clear that the story is not over. In fact, he points to a future in which Israel’s full inclusion will bring even greater spiritual riches to the world.
I can personally testify to how much richer the Gospel has become in my life through studying Jewish culture, history, and language. There are things in Scripture that become clearer when viewed through the lens of Jewish customs, thought, and writings. English translations communicate the essential message of Scripture, but they cannot always convey the full depth and richness of the ancient languages. Studying Hebrew and Aramaic, along with the cultural background of the biblical writers, has helped me discover nuances and connections I might otherwise have missed.
I was blessed by my Bible study long before I began exploring these ancient languages. I was saved without a single mention of anything Jewish. But the discovery, over the years, of the Jewish thought behind what I read in the Old and New Testament was like moving from a two-dimensional picture to a three-dimensional experience. The Scriptures I had known for years suddenly seemed to possess additional depth and texture.
